Welcome to HIST485 Head Tax Project website.
Despite the fact that Chinese Head Tax was removed from Canadian legislation over three quarters of a century ago, its significant impact on both individuals and society still lingers, remaining unresolved to this day. However, as time goes on, the impacts of and lessons from this discriminatory policy are, like many similar incidents of the past, at danger of being lost for new generations. As a result, a group of UBC students- enrolled in an upper level course on Asian Migration to Vancouver- have decided to explore this issue: the historical facts, the current knowledge deficit, and the overall importance of the Head Tax for students today.

Divided into three concise yet thought provoking sections, it is hoped that the information provided on this website will allow for a deeper understanding and recognition of the Chinese Head Tax. Designed for Canadian youth in upper elementary or high school, the information is accompanied by suggested discussion questions intent upon stimulating personal thought and consideration. It is hoped that related discussion and debate will produce a new generational awareness of not only the Chinese Head Tax itself, but more importantly the worth and value of past historical occurrences and the lessons therein for the future of Canadian society..
